Severny Rechnoy Vokzal

The Severny Rechnoy Vokzal is one of the most striking architectural symbols of Moscow in the 1930s and a monument of Stalinist architecture of national importance. The building was built in 1933-1937 by architect Alexei Rukhlyadev on the banks of the Khimki reservoir.

The station looks like a huge double—decked ship: the central tower with a spire and a star symbolizes the mast, open galleries with fountains — the bow and stern, and a string of columns - a fenced deck. The main theme of the design is the image of Moscow as the "port of the five seas": ships could reach the Azov, Black, Caspian, Baltic and White Seas through the Moscow Canal from here.
